Alphabet, the holding company of internet search group Google, is facing calls from shareholders to consider “risks to society” arising from its artificial intelligence technology, ahead of its annual shareholder meeting on June 19.
Hermes, the UK investment group, and ISS, the leading shareholder advisory service, are both backing a shareholder proposal pushing for board-level oversight of the issue, through the establishment of a formal “societal risk oversight committee” that would monitor the ethics and societal impact of Alphabet’s AI technology.
