Prime Minister Boris Johnson has announced a fresh lockdown for England, similar to the first one in spring 2020, as the new coronavirus variant continues to spread across the country.

In an address to the nation on 4 January, Johnson said that “it has been both frustrating and alarming to see how fast the new variant is spreading”.
