A proposal to establish a single European financial markets regulator met opposition at its first outing at a conference on European capital markets reform in Brussels with many delegates worried that it would distract from more urgent priorities.

Representatives from the investment banking and securities industry reacted less than enthusiastically to calls from Eurofi, an association promoting European banking and financial services integration, for a single regulator.
