Sponsors wanting to offload pension scheme liabilities on to insurance companies have discovered that pulling off the right deal involves tough negotiations.

They have found that insurance firms are willing enough to take on assets within schemes. But insurers are less willing to take on mortality risk because fund members are living much longer.
