State Street has banned its managers from asking prospective employees about their previous salaries in an effort to close the yawning wage gap between male and female staff at the US financial group.

The Boston-based firm is the first financial institution to publicly state it will stop senior managers across its global operations from enquiring about salary histories. State Street said the move was part of a set of initiatives to reduce gender inequalities in the labour market.
