I started work in the Square Mile in the late 1980s. It seemed to be acceptable to have a drink at lunchtime or go out after work with clients or brokers. I can clearly remember my first month’s expenses - they were sent back to me with a note saying: 'Please spend more next time'.

80% of the bills I submitted were for alcohol.
