Coming from a different era of office politics is no excuse for making someone feel belittled

The other day, as people were joking around in the office, I harmlessly said to a female colleague who was standing by a pole "how much do you charge?". It was funny at the time, but she later made a formal complaint. I can't defend the comment, but isn't she making too much of a big deal about it?
