London broker Beeson Gregory made a smart move last week with the appointment of David Norwood, the former captain of the England chess team and one of the game's grand masters, as its new chief executive.

Norwood is no Beeson rookie, having held a position on the board since March when the firm took on his private equity company, IndexIT.
