City of London types keen for a drink in the early hours when all other establishments have closed (or ejected them) might be interested to know that J Sainsbury has applied for a licence to sell alcohol at its Holborn headquarters until 5am. The retailer's offices have a store beneath that sells booze during the day but an application has gone before the authorities seeking to provide refreshment between 11pm and 5am.

Does this mean there will be a bar? Perversely, a Sainsbury spokesman said that despite applying for the licence, the shop would remain closed from 11pm until 6am. Presumably the drinks are for late-working staff only.
