The United Arab Emirates, the second-largest Arab Gulf economy, has ditched plans to join the proposed Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC, monetary union, casting doubts over the future of the common currency.

The UAE has decided not to be part of the Gulf monetary union and informed the GCC secretariat about its move to withdraw, an official source at the UAE's foreign ministry said Wednesday in a statement carried by the national WAM news agency.
