Sergio Ermotti, chief executive of UBS, has said the opening three months of 2019 have been one of the “worst first quarters in recent history” for its investment bank, amid a slump in deals and muted trading.

The Swiss group’s investment banking revenues are likely to be down by a third compared with the same period last year as a result, he said at an industry conference on March 20.
