UBS: Europe’s banks in desperate need of consolidation

A series of mergers could be the only way to secure the safety of a strained European banking sector, according to banks analysts at UBS.

The sector is "plainly too fragmented and too inefficient" to generate acceptable returns in an environment of low interest rates, the analysts, led by Jason Napier, wrote in a report this week. As a result, they expect to see a "very significant increase" in bank mergers in the medium term.
