UK companies close over 50% of DB schemes under review

Over half of UK companies that review their defined benefit pension schemes opt to close them to new members, according to research to be published later this month by Watson Wyatt, the investment consultancy.

Of the 219 companies that took part in Watson Wyatt's 2002 Pension Plan Design Survey and have undertaken a review of their final salary plans in the past five years, 56% decided to close the scheme to new members.
