UK university pension deficit doubles to £6.6bn

New figures are likely to fuel a running dispute over academics’ pensions, with strike action possible this autumn

The funding shortfall at the £64bn Universities Superannuation Scheme, the UK’s largest pension fund, has almost doubled to £6.6bn since last March due to falling interest rates. New analysis, however, claims it is likely to become more sustainable over time.

The figures will fuel a long-running dispute between staff unions and university senior leadership, over the amount academics pay to fund their generous pensions.
