UK’s closure of pubs and bars could mean a negative fourth quarter

'A renewed spike in Covid-19 cases and the growing likelihood of new restrictions suggests the economy will have a difficult winter'

 A national closure of bars and pubs in the UK and a semi-permanent shuttering over the winter could see Q4 GDP numbers sink below zero, according to analysts.

ING’s monthly economic update, published on 9 October, also noted that a two-week shutdown of social spending venues could see a hit to monthly UK GDP in the region of 3%.
