UniCredit has appointed a former Merrill Lynch banker to head its markets and investment banking division following the promotion of Sergio Ermotti to co-deputy chief executive of the bank last week.

Edoardo Spezzotti, previously co-head of global investment banking, takes charge of UniCredit's rapidly expanding investment bank, reporting to Ermotti. Spezzotti also becomes a member of the bank's management committee.
