Ursula von der Leyen was elected on Tuesday as the first woman to lead the European Commission by a small majority of the newly elected European Parliament. This confirmed the choice made by EU leaders earlier this month.

The German defence minister will take up the job on November 1. She was chosen by a broad coalition of centre-right conservatives and liberals, with the help of MEPs from some Eurosceptic parties, such as Italy’s Five Star Movement.
