ESpeed's legal action against three futures exchanges could cripple the industry

US intellectual property laws, which are often more lax than those in Europe, could be one of the biggest inhibitors to growth in the US futures markets.

In 1987 the US Patent Office approved a patent which now threatens the growth of its own markets. Legal sources say the same thing would never have been allowed to happen in Europe.
