US securities staff falls in downturn

The number of staff in the US securities industry fell last year for the first time since 1990 in the wake of the market downturn, according to figures from the Securities Industry Association (SIA).

The SIA's preliminary numbers show that the industry employed just under 744,000 people at the end of December 2001, compared to its record of 775,000 at the end of 2000.
