Sandy Weill is stepping down as chief executive officer of Citigroup on October 1, three months earlier than originally planned.

In July Citigroup promoted Chuck Prince to chief executive and Robert Willumstad to chief operating officer but said that they would take up their roles in January. Weill will still remain as chairman until the 2006 annual shareholders meeting.
