Derivatives trading on the up as investors shun equities

Trading in equities fell globally during the first half of the year – but listed derivatives become a 'growth engine' for exchanges

Nervous investors seeking to avoid the troubled stock markets amid economic uncertainty have scaled back on their trading activity in equities – however, they have ramped up their usage of derivatives, a survey has found.

According to data published by the World Federation of Exchanges, trading in equities fell by 1% across exchanges globally during the first half of the year, compared to the first half of 2010.
