Recent events in Afghanistan have dramatically brought home the reality of Britain’s place in the world in strategic terms. That learning should not be lost elsewhere, not least in financial conduct regulation.

Up until Brexit, the large bulk of our regulatory framework was 'made in Europe'. To describe us as rule takers is unfair — the UK played a very significant role in shaping policy — but membership of the club tied us to consensus decisions with which we did not always agree.
