Why private equity must lift its skirts

The private equity industry has never been keen on lifting its skirts to outsiders. When it comes to performance data the industry can claim the dubious distinction of being even less transparent than the traditionally secretive world of hedge funds.

Many hedge funds report their performance in a reasonably open and timely manner, and it is possible for investors to find reliable comparable data to make informed judgements about where to put their money. It is much harder for institutions investing in private equity.
