William Morrison gets green light for Safeway

Advisers to William Morrison, the UK supermarkets group, and retail entrepreneur Philip Green, have emerged as frontrunners to engineer the acquisition of Safeway after the UK government ruled out rival trade buyers.

Patricia Hewitt, the UK Trade & Industry Secretary, said on Friday that she accepted recommendations by the UK Competition Commission to block the proposed acquisition of Safeway by rival supermarkets Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco.
